The lack of French proficiency among Quebec's English-speaking students - comparing ourselves to Ontario
Why does the English-language school system in Quebec graduate students without any real proficiency in French?
A look at Ontario suggests an answer.
Francophones in Ontario complain because the number of Anglophones in French-language schools is detrimental to the learning of French.
Franco-Ontarian activist Basile Dorion believes that the situation of Anglophone students in the province's French-language schools has worsened over the years...The impact of accepting so many Anglophone students is a disadvantage for those who are Francophone, because it creates an Anglophone environment within the French-language school and facilitates the assimilation of young Francophones into English, Mr. Dorion believes. Now, compare this situation to that of Anglophone students trying to learn French in Anglophone schools in Quebec. It is not surprising that they have great difficulty acquiring a real mastery of French, given that:
- they are surrounded in class by non-Francophones;
- the main language of instruction in the Anglophone system is generally English;
- the language of management, teachers and administrative staff and the language of work is generally English; and
- the school system openly claims that their mission is to serve the Anglophone community.
Many English-speaking parents in Quebec choose to send their children to the French school system.
Our solution (see here) is to abolish the English school system and send all students to the French school system.
